About this space

Below a hiking trail, the edge of an abandoned sandstone quarry extends for many meters along the slope of the Weißeritz valley. The year of abandonment (and the  global economic crisis) 1931, is precisely engraved in the stone. Next to this date, there is kind of an empty compartment in the rock. The initial assumption that this might have been a former altar or shrine for the miners of the nearby tunnels was not confirmed. After online research, the theory was instead put forward that this artificial niche might have been used to store explosives.

Unlike digital photo material, the analog image, or as here the reprinted negative strip, has its own physicality. A cut through the image creates a dark gap, thus referencing the depicted rock crevices orthogonal to the motif.
